Buckland Retirement Village
This Australasian native garden ‘Robin’s Rest’ was a pro-bono project for Buckland Retirement Village at Springwood NSW, with cost of materials and plants generously covered by residents Alison and Ross Dorward. It features extensive sandstone retaining walls using material from the nearby Yellow Rock Quarry, crushed quartzite paths of gentle gradients, a dry watercourse, a succulent (cactus) section, and a profusion of grasses and sedges including unknown species. Some existing European trees had to be incorporated into the garden; these add summer shade and charm. The highlight of ‘Robin’s Rest’ is the profusion of Kniphofia (Hot Poker) flowers which in season produce a staggering display of colour in the heart of the garden.
A separate area of Buckland was developed into a Thyme Garden, using crushed red tile as a topping to retain heat and provide the thymes with good drainage.
